Inspirational Training with Barbara Carrellas in New York, Dec 2009
In December I had the privilege of attending Barbara Carrellas’ very first Urban
Tantra Professional Training Course in New York. It was an amazing gathering of
top-notch tantra and sacred sexuality practitioners from all over the world. There
were men and women there from Denmark, Sweden, New Zealand, Canada, UK
and all over the USA. We spent five days collectively creating new and wonderful
ways to teach conscious sexuality with Barbara generously leading the way.
For those of you not familiar with Barbara’s work, she is the author of Urban
Tantra: Sacred Sex for the Twenty-First Century and Luxurious Loving: Tantric
Inspirations for Passion and Pleasure. She has long been an inspiration to me in
my personal and professional lives, so it was a real honour to spend time learning
from her in person.
Arriving in New York I sensed that this was going to be a powerful and life-
changing experience. I was a bit nervous about meeting the group for the first
time, but found it to be an exhilarating and inspirational evening. We introduced
ourselves and learned more about what Barbara had in store for us. We were
given some homework to get started on and sent home for an early night’s sleep.
Over the next few days Barbara shared with us many of the practises, methods
and techniques she has created and used over the years as an author, sex
educator, university lecturer, workshop facilitator, and more. One of the things
Barbara is particularly known for is finding a language and way to facilitate sacred
sexuality for people of all genders and sexual orientations. We spent almost a
whole day exploring gender and our perceptions around that. It was an intense
and fascinating day! I learned a lot about myself and how to share tantra and
conscious sexuality with a much wider audience.
We spent a lot of our time sharing and discussing a wide range of interesting and
useful subjects. I was absolutely inspired and uplifted by the other participants
there. Each had his or her own individual gifts, talents and suggestions to add to
the group. Everyone got involved and had something unique to contribute.
The highlight of the course for me was the very last day. Barbara was going to do
a demonstration of a Sex Magic ritual with fire! I had met Barbara several months
previous in London and had witnessed this amazing Sex Magic ritual, so was
really looking forward to it. I was amazed and completely honoured when Barbara
then asked me to be the ‘body’ for the ritual! The experience of it really doesn’t
translate fully into words, but suffice it to say that it was a deeply moving and
thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Since returning home from the course, I’ve felt incredibly inspired and motivated. I
have a much fuller understanding of how important this work is in the world. I feel
encouraged to expand and create fresh, accessible and fabulous ways to help
people enjoy and celebrate their sexuality. And I can't wait to return to New York!
